Pet owners looking for new flooring have two main priorities…
Stain Resistance and Durability
For most pet owners it is probably best to avoid a loop piled carpet as the claws of animals get caught in the carpet. Nine out of ten times, we would recommend non slip vinyl flooring as it’s better than a laminate floor for so many reasons, such as:
- It’s waterproof
- You can mop it without fear of damaging it
- And the most important reason is that it is non slip
Avoid where possible laminate flooring for the following reasons:
- It can be quite slippery for pets
- It is very difficult to get it clean without washing it and
- Washing/mopping laminate flooring makes it swell up over a period of time
So what type of carpet should I buy?
The best type of carpet to buy for dogs or cats is a ‘polypropylene twist pile carpet‘. A quick tip - always go for a carpet near to your pet’s colour to avoid hoovering every minute of the day.
What Colour?
Some people assume that darker colors are better for carpets because they hide stains.
They are right… mostly. Although darker carpets will hide dirt from paws, spills from small hands and spit-up marks, they won’t hide white fur.
Consider your pet’s fur colour before choosing a carpet colour, as well as how much your pet sheds hair. Another possibility is choosing a carpet colour that contains many different colours, so that pet hair and other dirt will not show up clearly on its surface.
Good quality twist pile carpets are always best as they can be cleaned a few times without affecting the look of the carpet.
Other Useful Tips:
Always have your carpet professionally laid as a cat or dog can scratch and claw a carpet till it comes up and thus wrecking it.- Pick a carpet with soil resistance. Lots of carpets have stain resistance from common food and beverage spills but you would be surprised how many of those have no protection for tracked in soil so it is best to ask the estimator at the time for professional advice on the best carpet available for the type of pet you have.
- If you have allergies or suffer from asthma then a non slip vinyl flooring has got to be the way to go as mopping it stops the dust from kicking up, also dust mites and germs can’t hide in it.
